AI, Robotic Surgery and Telesurgery to Revolutionize Healthcare
SMRSC Conference: Include doctors in policymaking for affordability and inclusivity
Yogesh Payghan : Sakal News
New Delhi, April 9: Experts at the international SMRSC conference, which is shaping the future direction of healthcare, expressed that the convergence of artificial intelligence, robotic surgery, and telesurgery will bring a major revolution in healthcare services. Renowned doctors, scientists, industry experts, and dignitaries from India and abroad came together to discuss opportunities, challenges, and the future of the MedTech sector in India.
The Global SSI Multi-Specialty Robotic Surgery Conference was inaugurated by Union Minister of State for AYUSH Prataprao Jadhav on Thursday (April 9) at Bharat Mandapam. Organized by SSI Innovations International, this was the third edition of the conference. The event, which continues until Saturday (April 11), witnessed participation from surgeons, medical professionals, researchers, and innovators from across the country. Discussions on robotic-assisted surgeries, digital healthcare, and future medical technologies marked the first day. Madhusudan Sai and Dr. Frederic Moll guided the session online. Key dignitaries included Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari, Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, Dr. Sanjay Maheshwari, Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Dr. Vishwa Srivastava and Neetu Chandra.
Renowned urologist Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari emphasized the importance of AI and robotic surgery in treating prostate cancer, drawing from his vast experience. He stated that around 11 million people worldwide are affected by the disease, and the number is expected to rise sharply. In this context, accurate diagnosis, precision surgery, and preserving patients’ quality of life are major challenges. With the help of AI, digital twins and surgical co-pilots can enhance surgical precision and enable personalized treatment for each patient, he added.
Known as the pioneer of robotic surgery, Dr. Frederic Moll highlighted high costs and limited accessibility as major barriers. He stressed that robotic surgery should not remain confined to the private sector but must become part of public healthcare policy. Through telesurgery, expert medical services can reach patients in remote areas, thereby reducing healthcare inequality.
Founder of SSI Innovations, Dr. Sudhir Srivastava shared his inspiring journey of developing indigenous robotic technology. Inspired by his international experience, he aimed to create affordable and accessible technology in India. He noted that telesurgery has already made it possible to perform surgeries across thousands of kilometers. With future advancements in satellite-based connectivity and 5G, this technology will become even more effective. It can be highly useful in natural disasters, remote areas, and defense sectors.
High-quality technology at low cost
Former ISRO Director Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai cited India’s success in the space sector, stating that the country can similarly lead globally in MedTech. India has the capability to develop high-quality technology at low cost, and with proper opportunities and guidance, young talent can set new global benchmarks.
Return to villages after studying abroad
Director of MP Birla Group of Hospitals, Dr. Sanjay Maheshwari emphasized the need to deliver healthcare services to rural and remote areas. The true benefit of technology will be realized only when it reaches the last mile. Through telesurgery and mobile health units, healthcare facilities can be made available in villages. He also stressed that doctors trained abroad should return to serve their communities and that policymakers must include practicing doctors in decision-making.

A new era in surgery!
The humanoid robot ‘Avatar’ is set to assist expert surgeons in advanced procedures. With the concept of a mobile operation theatre, even patients in remote areas will soon have access to modern surgical care, said technology head Rama Krishna Reddy.
Indigenous robotic technology is expected to make surgeries more precise, safer, and cost-effective, opening doors to advanced treatment for all sections of society.
