Press Release
Mass detainment of SFI-DYFI comrades from Jantar Mantar 2.0, Gyanesh Kumar must resign immediately.
The Delhi Police carried out a mass crackdown on SFI and DYFI activists gathered at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In one of the largest mobilisations of students and youth in recent times, thousands of peaceful protesters were detained and manhandled by the police.
Among those detained were SFI All India leaders Adarsh M. Saji, Srijan Bhattacharyya, Aishe Ghosh, and S. Shilpa, along with DYFI leaders Himaghnaraj Bhattacharyya, A.A. Rahim, and Sanjeev Kumar. Senior CPI(M) leaders, including General Secretary M.A. Baby and Brinda Karat, were also detained while participating in the protest. More than 1,000 activists were taken into custody and transported to police stations across Delhi.
Students and youth from across the country had assembled at Jantar Mantar to peacefully demand the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner over concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and its impact on citizens' access to voting rights. The exercise risks disenfranchising large sections of the population, particularly marginalised communities, including Dalits, Adivasis, women, and other vulnerable groups. As students and youth, we refuse to remain silent when democratic rights are undermined. India belongs to its students, youth, workers, peasants, farmers, women, and marginalised communities. Any attempt to exclude people from democratic participation will be met with determined resistance.
The SFI Central Executive Committee reiterates its demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and will continue its struggle until accountability is ensured.
People United Shall Always be Victorious

“Gyanesh Kumar should be arrested for the criminal activity of cutting people’s votes,” CPI(M) General Secretary M A Baby said while being detained by the Delhi Police for joining DYFI and SFI activists who were peacefully marching to Jantar Mantar to demand the immediate ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, halt to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, and restoration of voting rights to all those who have been wrongfully excluded.
