Protest trigger is corruption & internet policing but PM Oli of Nepal is very pro-China. In 2016, he signed a transit & transport pact with China to reduce dependence on India. 2017, Oli linked Nepal to China's BRI. Oli, back as PM, refreshed BRI MoU in 2024 getting $41 mn in Chinese finances.
