After having discussions and sharing data with @ascopolice , we have joined forces to deliver a national specials survey affiliated to an academic institution more acceptable by forces as useful data to support their decision making, and reduces ‘survey fatigue’ for specials.

Probably little chance that we’ll get to it today given the assisted dying debate, but good to see @ascopolice colleagues championing the employment rights of specials.
We will get there.
We are preparing our second annual survey of Special Constables, in partnership with @sc_survey
This year we are also curious to know why so vey many ex specials have left.
What question would you be interested to ask?
@I_shantbenamed The survey will be repeated towards the end of this year, and changes in satisfaction level will be highlighted.
Hopefully the @StaffsSpecials leadership will be looking at the data we have made available to discover how they can improve the satisfaction of their specials.
In the light of recent posts, we thought it timely to share the results of the December ‘23 national specials survey force level data, and in particular the SC Satisfaction index by force/Met borough/PSOS division.
The survey will be repeated in Dec ‘24.

It’s a truism in policing that good data is hard to find. That said, the data released by the Home Office for the forces in England and Wales is pretty good, and limited data can deliver a huge amount of information…
Mid year release of the Special Constable Satisfaction Survey is now available, focussing on overall satisfaction and force engagement.

In relation to this, here’s an analysis of data collected December 2023 in the Special Constable Satisfaction Survey around likelihood to resign in the next 2 years by UK region.
@iam4rjk Effectively the train operating companies fund BTP, and drive it to reduce delays which incurred huge costs in fines and compensation, hence BTP’s effectiveness, dealing with and releasing suicide or murder scenes within a couple of hours, sometimes as quickly as 40 minutes.

@iam4rjk BTP do publish their own data on the numbers of specials, as do most other non Home Office forces with specials such as the Isle of Man and the Falkland Islands Police.
Headcount as at 31 March changes year on year from 1996 to 2023.
Heatmap adjusted to emphasise the changes a little more.
Dramatic the large % loss over just about all forces 2022 - 2023.
March 31 2024 headcount released by HO in June 2024.
Are we expecting more shrinkage?
@gmhales@iofiv Definitely not.
This is % annual change in HO reported SC numbers since 1995.
Anything below the red line is a decline.
The last year for which data is available (March 2022 to March 2023) has the most specials leaving ever recorded.
2023/2024 data is released in June.
An interesting read, especially when considering the culture wok driven by @ItsChrisDavison as described here https://t.co/gf3iJRPYtw
PraxSCis has developed a “self help” low cost organisational development tool for policing, now trialling in four forces. Email for more details.
Police forces in England and Wales are regularly assessed to see how well they meet demand and provide public service; Jon Freegard, Principal Consultant (Workforce Planning) at Skills for Justice, explores how these assessment cycles work, and how #workforce planning and #LeadershipDevelopment efforts are graded.
