“A man of genius cannot be popular, for popularity is the result of addressing the most common and numerous faculties of the human mind. To write for the crowd is always to write for the worst part of it.”

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky lost much of his hearing after scarlet fever and left school at about fourteen. He never attended university. At sixteen, he moved to Moscow and taught himself mathematics, physics and astronomy from books in public libraries. He later became a schoolteacher and spent his spare time studying flight, rockets and the possibility of travelling beyond Earth.
In 1903, while still teaching in Kaluga, Tsiolkovsky published one of the earliest serious scientific studies of space travel. He explained how a rocket could move in empty space, calculated the speed needed to orbit Earth, and showed why rockets require large amounts of fuel and multiple stages. He never built a working spacecraft, but his ideas became part of the scientific foundation of modern rocketry.

After the war, Feynman returned to Los Alamos to finish some work. One Saturday he needed an old document, but the classified library was closed. He remembered that physicist Frederic de Hoffmann kept copies of the project’s documents inside nine locked filing cabinets.
While waiting in de Hoffmann’s empty office, Feynman began experimenting with one of the locks. He guessed that a physicist might choose a mathematical constant as the combination. He entered 27–18–28, the opening digits of e = 2.71828.
Click.
The cabinet opened. He tried the same combination on two others. They opened too.
Feynman collected his document, then left mysterious notes inside the cabinets. One read:
“When the combinations are all the same, one is no harder to open than another, Same Guy.”
That evening, Feynman casually accompanied de Hoffmann back to his office. When de Hoffmann discovered the anonymous note, his face reportedly turned pale. He became convinced that the unknown intruder who had supposedly been trying to enter another secure Los Alamos building had now stolen the atomic secrets.
Feynman stood beside him, pretending to be equally puzzled, and calmly suggested that he inspect the other cabinets. Eventually de Hoffmann found the final note:
“I borrowed document no. LA4312, Feynman the safecracker.”
Feynman began walking down the corridor, expecting de Hoffmann to come after him in fury. Instead, de Hoffmann ran after him and nearly embraced him, relieved that the terrifying spy inside Los Alamos was only Richard Feynman amusing himself on a Saturday.
Elon Musk on Anthropic:
"I think Dario is a very principled person & he cares about things a lot. He cares about the future of the world. I think everyone I've met at Anthropic so far has been like, no one set off my evil detector. They always seem like they're well-intentioned"
