God tells us that we have to put to death the dictates of the flesh. We do this by denying them the right to control us. If we give in to them, we feed them, and they remain strong. But you can kill anything by starving it. If we don’t keep feeding harmful emotions, they will lose their strength and hold over us.

I remember all the times I felt sorry for myself each time I didn’t get my way. When I did this, I continued to strengthen the emotion of self-​pity. But when I began to deny it by praying my way through the disappointment of not getting my way, and trusting that God knew what was best for me, the emotion of self-​pity slowly but surely lost its power over me.

By the grace of God, I now rarely waste any time on feeling sorry for myself. When we do what is right when we feel like doing what is wrong, we are growing spiritually and pleasing God instead of our flesh. Each time we do this, the real us (the spiritual us) grows stronger and the flesh grows weaker.
