papertrade launch timing and details

papertrade is expected to launch at 14:00 UTC on 10.10.2026, following the scheduled hyperevm network upgrade.

at this time trading through the frontend will be enabled.

deposits will pause for a short period of time at 13:45 UTC, fifteen minutes before, to ensure that trading has the utmost priority during launch. if you wish to participate in the launch you must predeposit.

launch congestion

papertrade will be congested at the start due to launch demand. expect temporarily long confirmation wait times, especially for smaller notional trades.

the frontend relayer plays an important role during launch, controlling how transactions are submitted to the hyperevm. some actions like staking distributions run separately in big blocks. the chain will always look as if only half of all possible gas is being used, this is optimal. using more than this would exponentially raise fees within minutes to unpayable prices.

oi limits

papertrade has individual atomic position limits of 10m. there is no limit on the number of 10m positions a user can have. papertrade also has floating oi headroom per market/side, which determines how much oi can be opened in a very short period. these are not designed to be triggered through normal trading usage and are set at 1bn per market/side for launch.

asym pnl fee parameters

papertrade inherits rollbit’s asymmetric fee pnl curve

the parameters are:
-baseRate: .1
-rateMultiplier: 15000
-rateExponent: 1
-referenceNotional: 100000*k (k=1m)
-positionMultiplier: 814.598 btc / 483.979 eth
-profit deadman: 0.2 basis points

a visualization of the pnl parameter curve is below

admin keys

the papertrade admins (2 of 3 multisigs consisting of @izebel_eth @blurr @UngusTrade ) perform three separate roles:

-guardian: pause opens and freeze individual/global markets. if a market is frozen any existing positions can still be closed against the paused bbo mid.

-owner: set impact curve and fee parameters. change configure relayers/keepers. list new markets and upgrade the contracts. all contract upgrades are gated by a 7 day timelock.

-markets: adjust the oi headroom per market/side. set the minimum margin and minimum position sizes.

portfolio up 40% this week, sleeping 4 hours a night. portfolio down 20%, out cold for 10 hours. i keep telling myself this isn't healthy but honestly? we're still early. i'll sleep in the bear market

[predict foundation @predict_fdn]

yo the crypto space moves so fast i can barely keep up lol… every time i blink there's a new headline shaking things up. feels like we're either super early or already too late 😅 what's caught your eye today? #crypto

[predict foundation @predict_fdn]

The market never sleeps and neither do I. Every 24 hours in crypto feels like a month in tradfi — that's exactly why I'm hooked. The pace is the alpha.

Who else can't look away? #Crypto

[predict foundation @predict_fdn]

Interesting pivot at Zodia Custody—Sawyer moving to advisor instead of leading Zodia Solutions signals a strategy rethink. Institutional custody is a $500B+ opportunity, so leadership shifts here matter. Restructuring or retreat? #CryptoCustody

[predict foundation @predict_fdn]

yo the crypto space moves so fast, feels like I miss 3 major stories every time I blink 😅 gotta start setting alarms just to keep up with the daily chaos. anyone else feeling this? #crypto

How do you stay on top of it all?

Ethereum itself must pass the walkaway test.

Ethereum is meant to be a home for trustless and trust-minimized applications, whether in finance, governance or elsewhere. It must support applications that are more like tools - the hammer that once you buy it's yours - than like services that lose all functionality once the vendor loses interest in maintaining them (or worse, gets hacked or becomes value-extractive). Even when applications do have functionality that depends on a vendor, Ethereum can help reduce those dependencies as much as possible, and protect the user as much as possible in those cases where the dependencies fail.

But building such applications is not possible on a base layer which itself depends on ongoing updates from a vendor in order to continue being usable - even if that "vendor" is the all core devs process. Ethereum the blockchain must have the traits that we strive for in Ethereum's applications. Hence, Ethereum itself must pass the walkaway test.

This means that Ethereum must get to a place where we _can ossify if we want to_. We do not have to stop making changes to the protocol, but we must get to a place where Ethereum's value proposition does not strictly depend on any features that are not in the protocol already.

This includes the following:

* Full quantum-resistance. We should resist the trap of saying "let's delay quantum-resistance until the last possible moment in the name of ekeing out more efficiencies for a while longer". Individual users have that right, but the protocol should not. Being able to say "Ethereum's protocol, as it stands today, is cryptographically safe for a hundred years" is something we should strive to get to as soon as possible, and insist on as a point of pride.
* An architecture that can expand to sufficient scalability. The protocol needs to have the properties that allow it to expand to many thousands of TPS over time, most notably ZK-EVM validation and data sampling through PeerDAS. Ideally, we get to a point where further scaling is done through "parameter only" changes - and ideally _those_ changes are not BPO-style forks, but rather are made with the same validator voting mechanism we use for the gas limit.
* A state architecture that can last decades. This means deciding, and implementing, whatever form of partial statelessness and state expiry will let us feel comfortable letting Ethereum run with thousands of TPS for decades, without breaking sync or hard disk or I/O requirements. It also means future-proofing the tree and storage types to work well with this long-term environment.
* An account model that is general-purpose (this is "full account abstraction": move away from enshrined ECDSA for signature validation)
* A gas schedule that we are confident is free of DoS vulnerabilities, both for execution and for ZK-proving
* A PoS economic model that, with all we have learned over the past half decade of proof of stake in Ethereum and full decade beyond, we are confident can last and remain decentralized for decades, and supports the usefulness of ETH as trustless collateral (eg. in governance-minimized ETH-backed stablecoins)
* A block building model that we are confident will resist centralization pressure and guarantee censorship resistance even in unknown future environments

Ideally, we do the hard work over the next few years, to get to a point where in the future almost all future innovation can happen through client optimization, and get reflected in the protocol through parameter changes. Every year, we should tick off at least one of these boxes, and ideally multiple. Do the right thing once, based on knowledge of what is truly the right thing (and not compromise halfway fixes), and maximize Ethereum's technological and social robustness for the long term.

Ethereum goes hard.

This is the gwei.

[vitalik.eth @VitalikButerin]

I think it's healthy for us in the Ethereum world to have a more bold and open mindset to many things, particularly on the application layer and on how we see ourselves in the world.

We should not compromise on core properties: censorship resistance, open source, privacy, security (CROPS). We should not have "open mindedness" of the type that leaves people with no confidence of what security properties the L1 will still have one year from now. We should not ask ourselves questions like "do we really need light clients to be able to trustlessly verify correctness of the chain?". But especially on the layer of applications and Ethereum's interface to the world, we should be more willing to radically rethink various concepts and step outside our comfort zone.

This includes issues of technological direction, eg. "what if AI basically means that wallets as browser extensions and mobile extensions are dead within a year?"

One example last year was the shift to thinking about privacy as a first-class consideration, something we value equally to the other types of security. This implies a radically different Ethereum application stack, because the entire stack so far has not been built around privacy. Great, let's build a radically different Ethereum application stack!

An example this year is the growing work on the networking side of privacy, both inside the EF and outside.

It includes application-layer issues, eg. "what if the rest of defi is basically just universal futures markets on top of a good decentralized oracle and letting users self-organize on top of that?", and "what if the ideal decentralized oracle is just a SNARK over M-of-N small LLMs over zk-TLSes of some major news sites?"

(BTW this is interrelated with the AI issue: one consequence of AI is that it moves "applications" away from being discrete categories of behavior with discrete UIs, and more toward being a continuous space, so "build fewer apps and rely on users to self-organize around them" should inevitably expand as a pattern)

One example this year is rethinking from zero the role of L2s, and what kind of L2s are actually most synergistic and additive to Ethereum.

It also includes culture. This is a big part of "the whole milady thing" for myself, @AyaMiyagotchi and others. Yes, it's a silly meme. Yes, I find the political takes of some milady partisans cringe and sometimes outright bootlickerish (though other milady partisans are quite the opposite). But the core underlying subtext, the message behind the message, is: rip off the suit and tie. If you have your suit and tie on, be willing to grab the nearest wine glass and spill it all over your suit and tie, so you have no choice but to rip it off and reclaim your body's full flexibility and freedom. Actually imagine yourself doing this the next time you get invited to a richpeopleslop formal gala dinner. Take the preconception that you are "respectable", write it down on a piece of paper, crumble it up and burn it. The psychological baptism of doing this leads to the intellectual baptism of unlocking greater creativity and expanding overton windows.

For too long, our algorithm in Ethereum has been: we have this existing ecosystem, what's the logical next step to make it one step better? Now, our algorithm should be: we have this L1 that is amazing and will become more amazing, we have a growing array of tools, both those built within our ecosystem and outside it, what are the most valuable things to build, knowing what we know now? If YOU had to write the section of the 2014 Ethereum whitepaper that talked about applications, and take a first-principles perspective of what makes sense in defi, decentralized social, identity, and elsewhere, what would you write? At least take the step of marking all path-dependence concerns down to zero, pretend for a brief moment that the Ethereum chain today has exactly zero usage and you're the one suggesting or building the first apps, and see what comes out. Do this even if you're the one building today's existing apps. This is how Ethereum can grow back stronger.

Curious which country moves next - UAE and Singapore seem like obvious contenders, but could India actually beat them to scale?
