Governor Maura Healey just signed legislation that effectively green-lights abortion through all nine months of pregnancy in Massachusetts. The old 24-week limit is gone. Now the decision rests solely on “the professional judgment of a physician.” No clear legal guardrails. No meaningful protection for a viable child who can feel pain, who has a beating heart, who is fully formed.
This is not healthcare. This is the state declaring that a child in the third trimester has no independent right to live if a doctor and the mother decide otherwise. Healey stood there smiling, framing it as “protecting women” and defiance against “Trump and the Supreme Court,” while celebrating a law that moves Massachusetts into the small club of states with no gestational limit written into statute.

A governor who claims to care about the vulnerable just made it easier to end the lives of the most vulnerable. She signed it with cameras rolling, surrounded by activists, treating the deliberate destruction of late-term unborn children as a political win and a reelection talking point.

The Church teaches without ambiguity that every human life is sacred from conception to natural death. This law is a direct rejection of that truth. It is radical. It is grave. And it was signed into law yesterday with barely a ripple from the shepherds who are supposed to defend the least of these.
Silence in the face of this is not pastoral caution. It is abandonment.
