Let's take a minute to breathe. We are facing a real choice between two conceptions of the role of platforms in society.
It's not a debate about speech, but about governance.
At stake is who shapes algorithms, how decisions are made, and whether democratic societies can remain resilient in the digital space.

𝗡𝗢 space for scams.

Elon Musk on the Digital Services Act (2022): "I think it's exactly aligned with my thinking. I very much agree with (...) I really think, I agree with everything you (@ThierryBreton) said, really. We are very much of the same mind"
They first took away my freedom, now they are trying to silence my voice. On May 8, access to my official X account, followed by nearly ten million people, was blocked in Türkiye by court order. This is not only an attack on my digital freedom, but on the fundamental right of millions to access information.
According to the court decision, my posts “disrupt public order.” On the contrary: my words seek to build a just, inclusive, and democratic public order—one that respects rights, freedoms, and human dignity.
This campaign of judicial harassment will not cow me, whether it is the annulment of my university diploma or the baseless charges that attempt to link me to bribery, organized crime, or terrorism. These are not acts of justice, but of repression.
Like many journalists, writers, and public figures in our country, I now face this archaic and undemocratic method of censorship. But let it be known: these efforts will not succeed. I will raise my voice against injustice and one-man rule.

My voice will not be silenced!
Women in Afghanistan are being obliterated—no voice, no face, no existence. The Taliban’s latest decrees are nothing short of barbaric: women banned from singing, reciting poetry, or even speaking aloud in public. Their faces and bodies must hidden from the world.
This isn’t just an Afghanistan tragedy; it is a stain on the global conscience, brought about by our failure to act.
"This should alert political leaders – those that are ambitious are not only on the right side of history, they’re on the side of their people as well."

Brussels Region announced that only 12% of international residents are registered to vote for the municipals in October - a big drop from the last elections 😬
In Brussels a handful of votes can make a big difference.

With the Belgians taking over the EU presidency at the start of next year, I hope for more of such stances, and actions that match these moral positions recognising the centrality of human rights and international law.

Smaller countries don't mean smaller impact.
So proud of my adopted nationality 🇧🇪 #Belgium ! Taking a principled, moral position shows how small countries can be leaders at the international stage.
It busts the myth of the 'western' bloc being a navel-gazing homogenous behemoth.
It’s very rare for Human Rights Watch to praise a government for getting something right.

We have also seen this leadership from my dear #Ireland which called for a ceasefire in Gaza two days after the attack by Hamas.
Interestingly, Ireland was also the first EU country to call for a two-state solution (in 1980).
