And at the same time, I was lacking confidence in the thing I was making, so I wasn't motivated enough to do the work in the end. Maybe I'll try this again with something smaller someday.

I was creating the engine and tools for this from scratch and they were unpleasant to use. Creating your own tools is fun, but actually making the tools pleasant to use for a project is not so fun and takes much much more time.
