For three years, Pakistan’s authorities have systematically denied Imran Khan the right to a fair trial, subjected him to prolonged solitary confinement, and limited his access to medical care and visitation rights.

He has not been allowed to meet his family for more than eight months and his vision has reportedly deteriorated significantly. Both he and his wife, Bushra Bibi Khan, have now been denied regular access to legal counsel since December 2025.

Amnesty International urges the Pakistani authorities to unconditionally restore Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Khan’s right to see their family and lawyers. Both must be given access to adequate medical care and their solitary confinement, which is unlawful, should end immediately.

Ahead of planned gatherings by Imran Khan’s family, party and supporters to mark the anniversary, the authorities must facilitate the right to peaceful protest and ensure there is no repeat of the unlawful and arbitrary crackdowns on protesters so frequently witnessed in the country and against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Pakistani security forces opened fire on demonstrators near Rawalakot in Pakistan-administered Kashmir this week, with organizers reporting dozens killed as tens of thousands attempted a long march toward the regional capital, Muzaffarabad.

At least 30 people were killed over two days, 25 on Monday and five on Tuesday, according to the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), the civil society group leading more than 50 days of protests over electoral reform and detained activists. The Guardian said it could not independently verify the toll, as media were barred from the area and an internet blackout remained in place.

Organizers say forces fired on unarmed marchers without warning; police say armed protesters fired first, killing a paramilitary Ranger. JAAC says security forces later removed bodies from streets and hospitals in Mirpur to conceal the killings.

A resident who reached Islamabad told Drop Site that Rangers had raided homes and forced women at gunpoint to cook for them. Amnesty International has called on Pakistan to lift the communications blackout.

Reports are emerging that Pakistani security forces have opened fire on unarmed civilians in Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, resulting in dozens of casualties and an unconfirmed number of fatalities.

Footage from the aftermath shows multiple motorbikes strewn across the ground as police moved quickly to load bodies into vehicles, leaving visible pools of blood on the street.

The situation in Azad Kashmir remains highly tense following a dispute over the governance of the region, as well as assembly seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees in the elections, originally scheduled for July 27.

Since early June, nearly 40 people have been killed in clashes between protesters and security forces, with the region largely under lockdown to prevent further unrest.
