Ah yes, finally, Megan Thee Stallion's (@theestallion) official MV of "Mamushi" (Watashi Wa Star) has just released a few hours ago.
Some of you may not be fans of hers or even care, but we thought the music video was interesting as it's a depiction of nure-onna (濡女), meaning "wet woman"…… 👁👄👁 Here is our breakdown of the music video. Get ready for a doozy of information, my dudes. (🧵)
First, it's important to keep in mind that there are several variations of the nure-onna story, depending on the place where it is told. However, we'll only go over one, the version that best matches the MV.
Nure-onna is a type of yokai often characterized as having the body similar to a huge snake and the head of a young woman. "Mamushi" is a type of snake - the most venomous Japanese pit viper to be exact.
In Japanese mythology, the snake is a powerful symbol of transformation, wisdom, protection, and healing. They're believed to have the power to shed its skin and be reborn, making it a symbol of renewal and regeneration. Snakes also have a darker side in Japanese culture, however, and are associated with danger and deceit…
One thing to note is that the mamushi rattles it's tail, even though it isn't even a rattle snake. This may be a deliberate nod of deceit before she eats men.
"Mamushi" may also be a metaphor for "femme fatale", which would be very fitting for this music video.
In some tales, the nure-onna mainly exploits the beauty of her face and her luscious hair to lure unsuspecting bathers (or even fishermen) towards the edge of the water to become her prey.
She prefer to use trickery to lure people, such as pretending to be in distress (drowning). Though, a few stories of the nure-onna also describes her as simply a lonely woman who spends time washing her hair, becoming dangerous only if she is disturbed (relatable, to be honest).
She mainly roams at night along beaches or, despite its size, in small pools of water - such as an onsen/hot spring.
Now that the introduction of nure-onna is out of the way, let's go over some notable timestamps in the MV (screenshots posted for references) in this thread…
