Pit bulls were once popularly referred to as "nanny dogs" in the early 20th century, particularly in the United States. This nickname came from their reputation for being gentle, loyal, and protective companions to children. Families often trusted them to watch over kids due to their affectionate nature and tolerance.

The most referenced "nanny dog" was the American Pit Bull Terrier or similar breeds like the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

This image was reinforced by pit bulls frequently appearing in early American advertising and media, such as in Buster Brown shoes ads and with Petey, the dog in The Little Rascals.

In recent decades, the public perception has shifted due to media reports of attacks and concerns over irresponsible ownership and breeding. Despite that, many pit bulls are still beloved family pets known for their loyalty and affection, and their behavior, like any breed’s, largely depends on training, socialization, and environment.
