Bit of a different take on crypto w/ @mert & @GarrettHarper_ on @blockworks's @Lightspeedpodhq:
- History: If you're into crypto, it's a bigger story, larger opportunity than #🔺, but a receation of the world through abundance, generation, and participation. If you know someone who's not into crypto - as typically portrayed - perhaps use this as an onramp:
- New Capital Formation Mechanisms: Crypto's killer app is New Capital Formation building businesses that are not otherwise possible. Tokens are Oligarchy Busters, a lance pointed at atrophied bureaucracy and institutional gerontocracy. Birth of capitalism, formation of fractional equity / stock market are small foreshadows.
- Startups: Web2 playbook has set number of biz models and bets are on execution. Moats are features, not bugs, with spend going to FAANG advertising to influence. Crypto's new biz models by incientiving network formation through tokens jumps moats, solves cold starts, turns 'users' from 'products' to 'owners'. Future HBS/MBA case studies will find anything else unimaginable. Public now has visibility into what was previously hidden (volitility, chaos, etc.), and ability to 'invest' directly or via using the product/service. You are all now VC, enterpreneurs, startup team members.
- Historical Analogies for Crypto: "Generative" is a word often used, rarely reflected on - it's magic. the abilty to create value through utility. Print was a bad idea without a market, but created literacy, the media market - abundance ate scarcity of manuscripts but real impact was 2nd order - digital. Printed encyclopedia margins go down as search is more useful and accessible. LLC as new capital formation via fractional equity / stock market created greatest welath in history via more participation. Crypto is both - generative tech meeting increasingly participatory capital formatin. Last time this happened was at Renaissance with ledger-based new capital formation - aka Caplitalism and birth of the Middle Class.
- Tribalism: Maximalism serves an hsitoric function - it's socio-cultural network formation. Adherents must envision something not possible, persevere against 'obvious' FUD. Crypto is the economic substrate of that movement, providing ability to create networks before utility, through participation. But successful movements evolve to pluralism, rather than replacing 1 pervious hegemony with another (if if 'better' / more 'decentralized' / etc.). The new opens a pole in spectrum of design space. As new participants enter, tribalism shifts from feature to bug, and, in historically 'successful' movements, fades into irrelevance.
