While social media can negatively affect some young people's mental health it can also be protective in facilitating connectedness and a sense of community. Age-based bans may have unintended negative outcomes and a nuanced approach is needed. See how at https://t.co/jIs7Yt9xCR

We're thrilled politicians like @PMalinauskasMP see the need to take a preventive approach to the youth mental health crisis, but is a focus on social media the best or only place to start? See our policy brief https://t.co/0vJrGOS4Zo & discussion paper https://t.co/3P4PUuu0Rr

[Prevention United @PreventionUtd]

There's a lot said about the link btw screentime/social media & the youth mental health crisis, but in truth the evidence is mixed. So is social media the key target for preventive mental health or are other causes like child maltreatment the priority. See https://t.co/0vJrGOS4Zo

[Peter Malinauskas @PMalinauskasMP]

Dr Murthy has been a world leader in raising the alarm about the harmful impact of social media on the mental health of our children. Last year, he issued this advisory: https://t.co/smHnIIoNJ6

We're pleased to release our latest policy brief produced in collaboration with our Youth Advisory Group. It explores how we can harness the positive aspects of the digital environment while averting potential mental health harms among young Australians https://t.co/0vJrGOS4Zo.

[Prevention United @PreventionUtd]

@AlinaV_Psy "Mental health" is dimensional. We all have varying levels of mental wellbeing/mental ill-health so we need to support everyone to experience their best possible mental health via a two-pronged focus on mental health promotion (self-care + societal change) and mental healthcare.

This study and the Australian Child Maltreatment Study can't be ignored. Child maltreatment is prevalent, it's a huge cause of mental ill-health and suicidality, and it's preventable. Preventing child maltreatment must be a key pillar of every governments' mental health policy.
