Most people like to look at relationship through the moments of bliss and that is one of the biggest problem with dating today. I know the baecation in Mykonos is lovely, the kiss in NIKE Art gallery is fine, the sex on the beach is great, the regular gifts is gracious, turning up every weekend is amazing - but that is hardly the stuff of commitment and frankly, not the crust of life either.
I also know that focusing on only the good times, more often than not, leaves people unprepared or incapable of dealing with downsides in life. Life loves dealing with delusions. I like to look at relationship through possible crisis. Everyone loves a good time and it is not rocket science to have a good time. I'm a realist to the core and I love logic. I know every relationship will be tested because that is life.
You could lose a job, business could crumble, you could suffer miscarriage, you could lose a child, you could lose a parent or sibling, you'll have job/plan that threatens proximity, you could fall sick, you could have financial crisis, you could have parenting issue, midlife crisis lies in wait, your chikd could have down syndrome, a well thought out and well invested goal could go up in smoke, even your success might mean more time away from the home you love and that cherishes you, you are going to have your own share of life's everyday frustration.
Peculiar to each person, any situation could break a relationship or shake its foundation because crisis means energy level will drop and your partner could struggle to keep up to their side of the deal in a committed relationship.
I've always answered the question before making commitment. If I am ready to go through any low with you, then I am convinced I love you. Love for me is not mere butterflies in the stomach. It is much easier to kiss on the Eiffle and baecation in Bali than to deal with a depressed partner. Celebrating the birth of a new born is easier than dealing with the loss of a parent or sibling. Comfort is easier to live with than financial crisis.
Before you go all religious and forbid them, be real with yourself. Even scripture says in Isa 43:2 that 'When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon you.'
When NOT If. It is a certainty. God didn't promise a trouble free life. He only promised you won't go through it alone and he will help you overcome.
I would rather avoid any of life's possible blows but that is wishful thinking. So in the event of a blow, I am always ready. I am not an anxious person. I understand the complexity that comes with life as it does with love. I want to be there in those lows as much as I want to pop champagne in your high. We don't "outgrow" partners here. This is something the older generation know better than us but we think they are lost. We are the ones living in delusion.
Ask yourself, if you're ready to go the distance with your partner. Are you with them for the good time or for all time? "For better, For Worse" is the most important part of the marriage vow. But with shared love and sincere kindness, you can pull through any storm together. Be grateful for your perfect intimacy and celebrate the good times but be ready to be strong in time of crisis. Some experiences will make you realize that there is a vacuum in your life only God can fill. The least you can do for your partner is keep the faith when theirs is gone.
The truth is, a life of love will have some thorns, but a life without love will have no roses.
