We had previously thought that the river was gone/silted up here, with just a layer of plastic sitting on top. As a volunteer plunged in waist deep with waders on, we realised that the river was still 2-3 ft deep, but was full of plastic & floating rubbish built up over decades

So, it was a much bigger job than we had realised, but our group of 25 volunteers (a number of whom were from twitter!), gave up their Sundays to get muddy & wet to get it out. The rubbish ranged from the usual plastic bottles & bags through to crates, barrels, toys & polystyrene

As we removed the rubbish, something unexpected & somewhat miraculous happened: the river started to flow again! It was previously hard to imagine this muddy ditch full of rubbish as a river again, but as the silt settled, you could see clear flowing natural water
