I spent two weeks building a feature the hard way. ChatGPT showed me a much simpler approach in 20 minutes.

I was working on a small side project — a tool where users upload files and receive processed results back.

My original plan sounded reasonable: set up a server, build a queue, manage workers, handle retries, monitor everything myself.

Basically: “I’ll build it properly.”

Two weeks later, I had a half-working system that was becoming harder to maintain.

So I finally did what I should have done on day one: I explained the entire problem to ChatGPT and asked:

“What’s the boring, proven way to solve this?”

The answer was a little painful.

It walked me through several approaches from simplest to most complex, looked at my actual requirements, and pointed out something I had missed:

My workload was low volume. I didn’t need real-time processing. I didn’t need all the infrastructure I was building.

A much simpler architecture using managed services would solve the problem faster and with fewer things to break.

The most uncomfortable part was that it also explained why I had overengineered it.

The complex solution felt more like “real engineering.” Building queues, workers, and infrastructure made me feel like I was doing serious backend work.

But the goal wasn’t to build the most impressive system.

The goal was to solve the user’s problem.

I deleted around 60% of the code. The simpler version shipped in three days and has been running without issues.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned from using AI at work:

The most valuable prompt is often not:

“Build this for me.”

It’s:

“Tell me why my plan is wrong.”

A good AI assistant won’t just agree with you. It will challenge your assumptions, explain the trade-offs, and help you avoid spending weeks solving problems you don’t actually have.
