Andechs Expert Trail Race, 16km, 500hm, 1:30h, happy. this was a training race for a bigger one in a week. running last meters with our little ones. and they had as much fun as I. ended up midfield. 25/57 of my age group.
Running >70k a week, strength training, fueling, recovery - All of that working full time + taking care of fam w young kids.
Being a part-time endurance athlete is all about time management and I used to suck at it.
7 principles I learned over the last year to make it work:
@johngetstrong@johngetstrong , you said you increased your running mileage to 50km/week. was this the only aerobic training you did, or did you complement with e.g. indoor ergometer/bike?
My year in running! a map representation of all my runs in 2023. more than 200, in average more than 10km. a solid year, given i added also cycling to my training mix.
in yellow my three bigger races: Hohe Winde Bergmarathon 45k, Zugspitz Ultra 90k and Wildstrubel by UTMB, 55k. All finished, no injuries. Lets build on that.
for 2024 i'll closely watching advises from @Alan_Couzens and incorporate those into my training.
A favorite way of putting strong #FatBurning into a context that is very relatable - power on the bike...
Medium metabolic fitness =
Fat powers everyday tasks
A relatively metabolically fit individual with fat burning of 5kcal/min can generate about 83 watts purely from their (almost infinite) fat stores. As you probably know, this is a "walk the bike" intensity - enough to tootle around on the flat at very easy intensities &/or move through the non-training part of your day.
Strong metabolic fitness =
Fat powers easy training!
A very metabolically fit individual, e.g. a professional Ironman athlete can double this & generate ~170W purely from their near infinite fat stores. Throw a little exogenous CHO in the mix and the athlete can actually replenish glycogen while still doing some good aerobic base work!
Poor metabolic fitness =
Fat powers nothing!
A metabolically unfit/unhealthy individual is typically 4 times lower than our elite Ironman - able to power only ~40W from fat! 40 watts won't get you very far, very fast. A walk to the mailbox will have you over that! Which means, our metabolically unfit individual is dipping into their precious glycogen stores for many tasks through the day. This has a massive negative effect on their recovery and tolerance to training!
This is what building that strong #MetabolicBase is all about!
@jameybilyeu @Alan_Couzens love this response.. :-) to not hit the next root or stone.. narrow focus.. but for running healthy over trails in two years, probably zooming out makes sense ;-)
