Senator Robin Padilla hit back at critics on Thursday as he defended his move to question the prosecution's witness regarding the original and raw file of Vice President Sara Duterte's video on alleged grave threats.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Padilla explained that Zoom's built-in recording feature produces the original file, while copies taken from livestreams or other online sources should be considered duplicates that may be subject to alteration.

"Ibang klase talaga ang mga bayaran kahit alam nila ang katotohanan ay ililigaw ninyo ang mga tao. Ang zoom ay makakapag-record ng kahit anong nangyayaring conversation maging personal o live... 'Yan ang original copy na tinatawag, recorded ng kung sinoman ang nagsagawa ng zoom meeting o interview. Lahat ng kumopya dyan sa live feed maging ano man 'yan galing sa internet, duplicate na 'yan, anything recorded as duplicate can be manipulated," he wrote.

"Trabaho ng investigator hanapin ang raw o ang originally recorded ng creator ng meeting o ng interview... 'Yun ang laging basehan, hindi ang duplicate file," he wrote, adding that his background in mass media supported his explanation.

Padilla issued the statement after being criticized for repeatedly questioning NBI senior agent John Mark Calilung if he had secured the affidavit of the person who actually captured Duterte's Zoom recording where the vice president stated that she allegedly contracted an assassin to kill President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

‘WHO CAN AUTHENTICATE THE VIDEO: ME’

Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that he is among the individuals who can authenticate the video related to Vice President Sara Duterte’s November 2024 alleged grave threats, as he was the one who broadcast it on Facebook.

During the second day of Duterte’s impeachment trial on July 7, NBI Senior Agent John Mark Calilung took the witness stand as the prosecution’s first witness and authenticated the videos.

Roque, in a separate statement, said the cross-examination showed that Calilung was not “presented or qualified as a digital forensics expert” or a competent witness to authenticate the video.

Roque, who left the country in 2024, has since been declared a fugitive after the Angeles City Regional Trial Court’s Branch 118 ordered his arrest in May last year on human trafficking charges in connection with his alleged involvement with Lucky South 99. #VPonTrial
