Dr. Marystella Simiyu of @globalfreemedia emphasized the critical role of a free and independent #media in advancing #climate, #water and #sanitation goals across #Africa.
She noted that #journalists play a key role in reporting the human impact of climate challenges, water scarcity and natural resource exploitation, while holding governments and businesses accountable for their responsibilities.
“The media plays a crucial role in this regard in terms of #education, awareness, and accountability.”
Dr. Simiyu also highlighted growing risks faced by climate and environmental journalists, including intimidation, arrests and strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs), stressing that protecting journalists is essential to ensuring communities have access to reliable information on issues affecting their lives and livelihoods.

Mr. @louischeicks (Presiding Officer of @AU_ECOSOCC) underscored that the adoption of the @UN General Assembly Resolution recognizing the trans-Atlantic trafficking and enslavement of Africans as the gravest Crime Against Humanity is a historic milestone, but "recognition alone is not the destination. Recognition must give rise to action."
He said the Forum provides an opportunity to translate shared aspirations into practical action through stronger partnerships, informed policies, and measurable strategies on reparative justice, sustainable development, and #Africa-#Diaspora cooperation.

Do you know your rights?!
Every woman and girl in #Africa should.
Across the continent, African Union instruments recognize and protect fundamental rights, from #education and #healthcare to freedom from violence, equal protection under the #law, political participation, property ownership, and protection during conflict and displacement.
These aren't just aspirations. They're grounded in regional legal instruments, including the Maputo Protocol, the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
📌 Save this cheat sheet for future reference.
📤 Share it with the women and girls in your life. Knowing your #rights is the first step toward claiming them.
Which of these rights do you think more people should know about?

📢 Advocacy isn't a one-time campaign. It's a cycle!
The strongest advocacy efforts don't begin with a press release or end when the campaign wraps up. They start by defining a problem, understanding the policy landscape, setting clear objectives, identifying who needs to be influenced, building alliances, tailoring messages to different audiences, choosing the right communication channels, mobilizing the resources needed, implementing the campaign, and then measuring what changed.
That final step is often overlooked. Monitoring, learning, and adapting aren't administrative tasks to tick off at the end. They help you understand what worked, what didn't, and what to improve before the next advocacy effort begins.
The ECOSOCC CSO Toolkit on the Conduct of Advocacy walks #civilsociety organizations through this 10-step #advocacy cycle, offering practical guidance for engaging with policy processes at the national, regional, and @_AfricanUnion levels in support of #Agenda2063.
Which step is the biggest challenge for your organization? We'd love to hear your experience in the comments!

Today is the Day of the African Child!
🚰💧This year's theme, "Ensuring Universal Access to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for Every Child in Africa," highlights a reality that affects millions of children across the continent every day.
Without safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services, children face a higher risk of disease, poor health, and disruptions to their #education. These challenges are often most severe in rural communities, informal settlements, and humanitarian settings.
Despite progress in many countries, access remains out of reach for millions. @UNICEF estimates that more than 190 million children in ten African countries face risks linked to unsafe #water, inadequate #sanitation, and related diseases.
Access to water, sanitation, and hygiene is not only a #publichealth issue. It is essential for children's well-being, education, dignity, and development.
ECOSOCC joins the @acerwc, @_AfricanUnion Member States, civil society and partners across the continent in calling for sustained investment and action to ensure that every child has access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

Today is the Day of the African Child!
It's a day to honor the young lives lost in the 1976 Soweto Uprising and to recommit to the rights of every child across our continent.
As ECOSOCC, the civil society organ of the @_AfricanUnion, we believe that the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (#ACRWC) is only as powerful as the children who know it. So we made this video that brings together all 3️⃣1️⃣ rights in one place, explained in a way children can understand.
When children know their rights, they are better equipped to speak up, seek support, and recognize when those rights are being denied.
#CivilSociety, parents, teachers, communities, and institutions all have a role to play in making sure every child knows the rights that belong to them.
Share this video with a parent, a teacher, a child, or anyone who works with children!

How does a retreat with cattle, music, and dance shape the youth empowerment and community?
In Chad, the fifth-largest country in Africa, rich in diverse traditions, the Guruna stands out as a living heritage that blends pastoral life, artistry, and economic education. Guruna is an annual pastoral retreat where young people learn cattle care, wrestling, music, dance, and community values, making it both a cultural school and a rite of passage. It is a heritage practice of the Massa people, added to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2025.
Why does it matter?
🎯 Coexistence and Cohesion: This ceremony fosters gender inclusion in that both boys and girls participate in sustaining the tradition. While young boys and men move with cattle to a camp away from home. Women and girls contribute to this learning process through food preparation and decorations.
🎯 Youth Skills Development: Guruna functions as a non-formal education system, preparing youth for adulthood. The young boys go out to learn life skills such as Cattle breeding and veterinary care, wrestling, music, dance and handicrafts.
🎯 Knowledge Transmission: Knowledge is passed down to younger generations annually through oral instruction, observation, and imitation, guided by elders and Guruna masters, enhancing oral history, social values, teamwork, and discipline.
🎯 Showcases Respect for Ancestral Values: These include respect for elders, community identity, discipline, and responsibility, strengthening cultural pride and continuity across generations.
Does your community have a tradition that empowers Youth like Guruna, or something beautifully different? How do you celebrate the bond between youth empowerment, culture, and heritage?
