“We need to collaborate, we need to get together, we need countries and individuals to work together to make this a better world so that we can be a little bit proud of what we leave for our children.” — Dr. Jane Goodall, UNESCO, 19 October 2024.
Dr. Jane Goodall delivered these words at @UNESCO in a historic address before a thousand young activists, decision makers and scientists. Today, we pay tribute to a woman who changed history: Dr. Jane Goodall. A pioneer whose life was devoted to the protection of nature, the sharing of knowledge, and the respect for all living beings.
At #UNESCO, she stood before the world with a message of hope, reminding us that our future depends on caring for gorillas, for wildlife, and for our common Earth. Her words were simple yet profound: hope lies in action, and each of us holds the power to protect the fragile web of life that sustains us.
For generations to come, she will remain proof that another world is possible.
Her passing is an immense loss — and also a renewed call to action.

Electronic dance music (EDM) exhibits a hierarchical structure also found in comics/cartoons! Out now in Musicae Scientiae https://t.co/u7N9olZ9lZ - thread below:
EDM syntax shows that similar cognitive principles are at play in two different modalities, audio (EDM) and visual (comics), allowing for one-to-one mappings between visual categories and EDM categories. /3

There are plenty of bad incentives in academia, but by and large scientists and mathematicians are genuinely working to try to better understand the universe. The only long-term model we’ve found thus far to support such work is public funding.
Don't forget to submit your abstracts for #Protolang9 in Vienna in September 2025! Submission deadline for individual papers and workshops: February 14, 2025. More info: https://t.co/522vZdc8sG Looking forward to seeing you there! @protolang_conf
@ben_golub Yes, I considered doing a poll at first, but was interested in further information that people might wish to share (e.g. age, variety of English, dialectal area etc); the aggregated way in which a poll presents the results would have been too minimal.
@ChrisTCollins His book didn’t look at dialectal and interspeaker variation, as I recall. The experimental studies on Norwegian also suggest that some of the examples marked as good in the literature aren’t that good after all (but others are). To be continued!
@ChrisTCollins Thanks! I’m aware of the recent developments, I’m more interested in dialectal variation with this particular construction. In recent years, a number of papers on Norwegian claim the language is much more liberal in violating islands than English.
FIRE's President and CEO @glukianoff: Colleges and universities should be citadels for self-reflection and talking to those you disagree with.
The unrest on college campuses shows how far some have strayed from this central purpose of higher education.
