At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, the JMSDF confirmed the presence of a PLA-N Dongdiao-class intelligence collection ship (hull number “798”) sailing southward in waters approximately 70 km west of Kume Island, Okinawa Prefecture.

Subsequently, the vessel was observed transiting southeastward through the waters between Okinawa Island and Miyako Island, heading toward the Pacific Ocean.

The JMOD and the JSDF conducted surveillance and information gathering using JS Towada (homeported in Kure) of the JMSDF 1st Replenishment Squadron and a P-3C aircraft from the JMSDF 5th Air Patrol Squadron (based in Naha).
