@nolongerlen no sorry, fandom now requires extroversion. you must now emerge from your cave and express support at full volume, and absolutely NOT just leave a heart and scurry away. lurking is now considered hostile behavior. keep up
ao3 going down really forced different users into first contact and now everyone’s discovering that we are, in fact, completely different species of alien with vastly different ways of participating in the community
and some of you are so visibly upset the other species exists
In my undergrad thesis many many years ago, I included lurkers (folks who don't interact much, not even to leave a comment at times, but read fic or look at fanart, watch edits/fanvids, etc.) because fandom has long seen lurkers as key members of the community.
Lurkers were never seen as bad, they were just doing community quietly.
In fandom, you give what you can give and your participation or role is never something that is set in stone. You can be a lurker one day and organizing a Christmas challenge the next. You can be less active today and more in the future. And so on.
Do not let people make you believe that you have to be productive and/or visible all of the time to be seen as a "real fan".
But also, do not forget that when you're part of a community, you're not alone, and giving people small kindnesses, like liking a post or even just sending up a positive emoji when you see something you've enjoyed is part of maintaining a healthy, happy community. It does make a difference.
(That said, please don't shake people down for positive interactions. We're all humans trying to find joy on a planet in a polycrisis.)
Remember: You love the thing, you show it in your own way, and belong to a community. Do all that and treat people kindly, and that's all you need to be a fan. Do not lose the fun and whimsy!
ok y’all genuinely need to retire the monetization conversation quickly before a snitch or anne rice 2.0 decides to go hunting. we already have enough cautionary tales, from disney to pissed authors with lawyers. stop testing the line before an entire corner of fandom gets nuked.
@lycoaeris wait... someone bring me up to speed, is "master" no longer the gender neutral emergency exit or did that also get caught in the PC crossfire too.
i think some of you are too young to remember the “I don’t own *original IP* or the characters. All rights belong to the creator. I gain no profit from this body of work.” disclaimer that was copy-pasted onto the start of every fanfic. bc wdym you think you “own” your fanfic 😭
looks like i missed most of the fire but smoke is still in the air. love seeing everyone acting like wartime widows waiting for their husbands tho #AO3Down#ao3
I feel like some of yall are losing the plot… THE HISTORY OF FANFICTION IS PASSING STORIES BETWEEN FANS
THE STAR TREK FANDOM, FOUNDERS OF FANFICTION, WOULD TYPE FICS ON THEIR LITTLE TYPEWRITERS, PHOTOCOPY THEM, AND PASS THEM AROUND AT CONS
