Recruits: Your HS coach and future College coach definitely have favorites.
Their favorites are guys that show up on time, stay out of trouble, get good grades, work hard, are good teammates, know their playbook, do their job, & make the plays they are supposed to.
Wow — I’ve got to say, DB coach Aaron Henry might be my favorite coach to interview. He’s incredibly articulate, super thoughtful and somehow always leaves you with more wisdom than you came in with.
Today I asked him how he balances coaching guys hard without overwhelming them with too much detail, and he gave me nearly a four-minute answer:
Notre Dame DB Coach Aaron Henry dropping truth on modern coaching
Care first. Make it fun (games, colors, analogies)
Meet them where they are. Then push hard
This is how the best coaches & programs build real buy-in
Old school coaches — watch this.
Most assistant coaches avoid tough conversations with their head coach.
Then wonder why they're not developing or advancing.
Here are the conversations you need to have (even though they're uncomfortable):

This has to be the craziest ending to a Louisiana high school state championship game ever.
Shaw was one kneel-down away from winning, but an early celebration stopped the clock—and St. Charles took full advantage

The best players we've ever had were blessed with families that weren't in a rush. They allowed their child to create passion for the game & it directly led to work ethic.
They weren't the best players at 12u, 13u, or 14u but they developed grit that other players were shielded from. Their parents allowed them to fail, didn't save them, kept pushing them to work & show up.
Most talented players at a young age never come to fruition bc they are late to learn how to fail, create work ethic, & parents thinking they are God's gift which in turn creates complacency.
We all know the kid that was shaving at 12 & was an absolute stud but when everyone hits puberty & the field dimensions change everyone forgets about that kid.
Give me the small kid with heart, hustle, work ethic, & attitude all day long and let's see what happens when they are 17. He will be the most physical dirt bag kid there is, that every coach loves to coach & needs on their squad. 👊🏼
