Inside the Business of Kenya’s Online Chaos and Paid Activism.
Kenya is facing an alarming and largely invisible threat, the rise of digitally organized mercenaries operating under the guise of activism, patriotism, and civic engagement. These are not ordinary citizens with genuine grievances. They are part of a highly coordinated, well-funded digital force what I refer to as “digital goons”whose sole mission is to disrupt, disorient, and destabilize public trust for profit or political gain.
Their battlefield is your phone screen, your social media timeline, your WhatsApp group. And their target is not just the government it’s you, the ordinary Kenyan trying to survive and raise a family in peace.
As someone who has spent years studying political behavior and the psychology of social influence, I can say this with certainty: the Kenyan psyche is under attack. These digital actors use psychological tools meant for warfare fear mongering, emotional manipulation, disinformation, and identity-driven rage to create chaos where there should be conversation. They don't aim to inform or reform. Their goal is to inflame. They manufacture fake narratives, amplify anger, silence moderates, and create an illusion that the entire country is on fire even when it's not.
Most Kenyans are unaware of just how carefully orchestrated these operations are. There are cells behind screens, teams of people assigned to trend hashtags, create fake accounts, spread edited videos, and attack anyone who deviates from their preferred narrative. Some operate from foreign influence networks, others are funded locally by disgruntled political cartels and dynasties seeking to regain power.
They are paid per trend, per outrage cycle, per chaos. What’s worse, their success is often measured in real-world outcomes: street violence, mass panic, and sometimes the death of innocent people. They never pull a trigger but they are often the ones who lit the fire.
The tragedy is that the poorest, least connected Kenyans are the most vulnerable to this digital terrorism. If you’re a mama mboga in Naivasha, a boda boda rider in Eldoret, or a university graduate without a job in Mombasa chances are, you’re the one whose emotions they’re trying to hijack. They want your despair, your frustration, your unhealed trauma. You are the vessel through which their anger is made to appear national. They exploit your pain to push their paychecks. And when the streets are burning, they’re not there. They’re behind screens in cafés, protected, paid, and completely indifferent to your suffering.
The government is not perfect, no government is. But it is wrong and dangerous to weaponize information and emotions to destabilize the very institutions that are trying to serve and reform. The long-term damage from this kind of digital assault is immeasurable. It creates deep psychological fatigue, desensitization to violence, erosion of truth, and permanent division. In such a climate, even good policy is mocked, and even peace is branded as weakness. When this happens, a nation doesn't just face a political problem it faces a mental health crisis.

@ahmednasirlaw You gotta give it to them, English common law or some sort of it, (hybrid of the common law and civil law), one third of the world population lives under the common law jurisdiction. Including kenya where it is practiced fully!!!
@CommerceJs https://t.co/tGEHeL31iK Has been down for a while now. What's wrong? Pictures are not loading with status code 403. I thought it was on my end but it seems to affect most projects built on it. Any updates?
