The reaction is with the aldehyde or hydroxy ketone not the alcohol. This is a test for reducing sugars. See the page reference for more details

@prof_bong For Tollen’s test, which alcohols are oxidized? Is it only the one adjacent to the carbonyl or do all of them oxidize?

Start with making flash cards for the reactions and mechanisms in the chapter summaries. Use the flash cards to figure out what you need work on and do those problems and read those sections. I guess it would be the later chapters for most ppl

The second one is more correct as it reveals why that oxygen is the nucleophilic one

It is. The free nh2 can react directly with the SO3. Possible over sulfonation as well. Generally, any answer from the book will be counted as correct
