AIPC | LGBTQIA+ Domain | Karnataka

The AIPC LGBTQIA+ Karnataka Domain, led by Priyank Asha Sukanand, State Head, along with community members and well-wishers, met today with Mr. K. Shashi Kiran Shetty, Advocate General of Karnataka, to discuss the petitions before the Hon'ble Supreme Court challenging the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026.

The delegation urged the Government of Karnataka to file a counter-affidavit supporting the petitioners, uphold the constitutional rights of transgender persons, and seek interim protection restoring the safeguards of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, pending the final hearing.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Ms. Sowmya Reddy, President, Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress, for her continued solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community and for supporting this important engagement.

AIPC | LGBTQIA+ Vertical | Karnataka

Today, it was an honour for our Karnataka State Head of the LGBTQIA+ Vertical, Priyank Asha Sukanand, to meet the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri D.K. Shivakumar Ji, alongside Smt. Sowmya Reddy, President, Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress, to discuss strengthening LGBTQIA+ inclusion across the state.

The meeting focused on the proposal to establish a Transgender Welfare Board in Karnataka, along with other policy recommendations aimed at advancing equality, dignity, and inclusion for LGBTQIA+ communities.

Priyank Asha Sukanand also presented the Hon'ble Chief Minister with the official AIPC LGBTQIA+ Vertical badge as a symbol of the party's commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusion.

The Modi government’s recent passage of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act, 2026 has effectively de-recognized a huge chunk of India’s transgender population, while withdrawing its right to self-identification, and cutting access to healthcare and social welfare benefits for the community.

The community, in turn, has responded with several petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the amendments in the Supreme Court, to which the apex court has directed state governments to reply with counter-affidavits. As India’s states prepare their responses to the Supreme Court’s directive, the AIPC LGBTQIA+ Domain has been meeting with the Advocates General of INC-led and allied state governments to convey the Party stand on the issue, and urge them to file counter-affidavits in support of the petitioners.

After the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Lok Sabha MP, Ms. Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra met with members of the transgender community in March this year, the Indian National Congress took a well-publicized stand against these amendments, stating in Parliament that the Act, which “presents as a reform, is in reality a retreat from constitutional morality, judicial guidance and the hard-fought rights of one of the most marginalized communities in our country.”

On the weekend, Don Hasar, our National Coordinator for Community Engagement & Movement Building, met with the Advocate General of Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Anup Kumar Rattan and the Deputy Advocate General of that state, Ms. Ayushi Negi in Shimla. Mario da Penha, our National Head and Sri Krishna Ananthan, our Deputy Head of Tamil Nadu met with Mr. P. V. Balasubramaniam, the Additional Advocate General of Tamil Nadu, online to convey our views.

We will be meeting with the legal representatives of other states soon as well. The entire LGBTQIA+ community opposes these appalling amendments, and the Congress Party stands with the community. We will not back down until they are withdrawn. Watch this space!

*CorroHealth Mass Layoffs: Professionals’ Congress Holds Discussions with Labor Minister and Uma Thomas MLA*

Detailed discussions were held with the Honorable Minister for Labor, Adv. Bindu Krishna, and Uma Thomas MLA—who has been actively intervening in this issue from the very beginning—regarding the mass layoffs at CorroHealth. The meeting involved extensive deliberations on the challenges faced by the IT sector and the measures needed to address them.

​It is expected that the issue will be handled in a manner that provides complete relief to the employees by addressing their anxieties, while simultaneously maintaining an industry-friendly environment. The Minister assured that immediate steps will be taken to implement the 'Office Wellness Policy' at the earliest.
