BIPOC are also repeatedly gaslighted by others around them that they are not being harmed and eventually internalize this false narrative. All people need to be able to listen in order to understand another’s perspective without feeling defensive or attacked. (2/2) #edu6595
In June 2020, Dr. Ramani Durvasula discussed the chasm in U.S. culture regarding racism & institutionalized racism. She highlights the fact that Black people are continuously harmed in this country because of their skin color or the effects of their past disenfranchisement. (1/2)
A couple of questions I have for anyone seeing this:
How can teachers best support their students who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, non-binary or transgender?
Did you yourself have a Gay Straight Alliance that you participated in in your own school? #edu6595#transrightsinschools
It saddens me that parents can take issue with students being afforded the same rights that their own children enjoy, such as using a restroom or locker room that affirms their gender identity. #edu6595#transrightsinschools#TransRightsAreHumanRights
If it makes others in the school community uncomfortable, then restrooms should be reconstructed to include fuller coverage of individual stalls, similar to many new builds and gender-neutral restrooms with shared sink areas. (2/2) #edu6595#transrightsinschools
As a teacher, I think that any sort of discrimination based on one’s identity is wrong and should not be allowed by law. All students should be allowed to use the restroom that affirms their gender identity (1/2) #edu6595#transrightsinschools#TransRightsAreHumanRights
This case can be applied forward to Title IX, which protects students against sex discrimination in their publicly funded schools. Some implications may be protecting the right to use the bathroom that affirms one's gender. (3/3) #edu6595#transrightsinschools
This case pertained to Title VII as an employee cannot be discriminated against based on sex. The ruling was made that Bostock was discriminated based “but-for” his sex, for being attracted to men, since a woman would not have been fired for being attracted to men. (2/3) #edu6595
In June of 2020, The Supreme Court saw the case of Bostock v. Clayton County. It ruled in favor of Bostock and held that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects employees against discrimination because they are gay or transgender. (1/3) #edu6595#transrightsinschools
“Education either functions…to [integrate youth] into the logic of the present system & bring about conformity or it becomes the praxis of freedom, by which [all] deal critically and creatively with reality & discover how to participate in the transformation of their world”
