Interview with me in today’s @thetimes about the need for schools and parents to work together on student behaviour. Headline’s a bit chaotic, but the discussion was great.

After Section 28: LGBTQIA+ Rights in an Age of Censorship and Backlash – Angela Ruskin University Conference
The EIS welcomed the opportunity to contribute to a conference in Angela Ruskin University, organised by Sarah Drummond, Director of ‘Don’t Say Gay’, the first feature-length doc about the 1988 legislation implemented by the Conservative Government banning the 'promotion of homosexuality'.
Marking LGBT History Month, the conference was an important opportunity to hear from activists who worked to repeal Section 28 (Section 2A in Scotland), to network, and discuss ideas on how to organise within the current context.
Speaking at a panel on censorship in schools and libraries, EIS LGBT Sub-Committee Co-Chair Pam Currie noted the importance of giving confidence to teachers and lecturers to take LGBT Inclusive Education forward in Scotland, in the context of a rise in prejudicial and harmful narratives: “It was a brilliant opportunity to hear and learn from the generation that went before us who lived through the 1980s as out and proud adults and fought Section 28/2A - that was so inspiring. I think that and the whole day will stay with me for a very long time and it’s especially important in the context of the backlash we now face.”

The EIS has today (Monday) announced that it will soon launch its new Manifesto for Education, including key costings, ahead of the Scottish Parliament election. #EISNews

It is so important to get your vote in before the ballot closes, and to vote Yes-Yes to ensure a positive outcome for all teachers!
Last minute christmas cards to post? Post your ballot as well!
Current employer and trade union guidance for reducing teacher workload has not been effective – contractual changes are needed to guarantee workload reduction. Vote YES for the manifesto-promised contractual change, to less teaching time and more preparation time.
Scottish Government & COSLA commitments on workload have failed, including a specific clause in the 2018 pay settlement aimed at tackling excessive teacher workload – workload has since spiralled even further out of control. Vote YES for an SNCT agreement focused specifically on workload reduction.
ASN-related work is a big part of the unsustainable workload problem – with at least 40% of young people having an identified support need and a 20% reduction in ASN teacher numbers since 2010, there are simply not enough staff or sufficient time to respond to the level and complexity of ASN need.
Vote YES YES for more staffing for ASN https://t.co/AirCvdeZ5w
We are losing teachers from the profession and we are likely to lose more teachers because of excessive, unsustainable workload. We need more teachers, not fewer, in our schools.
Vote YES to keep experienced teachers in and attract new ones to the profession https://t.co/AirCvdeZ5w
The EIS has noted today’s flurry of education statistic releases from the Scottish Government, and highlighted that the figures confirm the Scottish Government’s failure to meet its commitments on the employment of additional teachers as a means to tackle excessive teacher workload.
