British record holder Josh Kerr will attempt to break Hicham El Guerrouj’s 27-year-old mile world record of 3:43.13 on Saturday at London’s Olympic Stadium.

Kerr’s current mile PB is 3:45.34. The closest anyone has come to El Guerrouj’s mark since it was set was Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Yared Nuguse running 3:43.73 and 3:43.97 at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic, which was the first time since 1999 that anyone not named Hicham had gotten within two seconds of the record.

Just like everyone else this week, we’re asking the same question: “Can he do it?” And frankly, it could go either way.

Olympic bronze medalist 🇺🇸 Yared Nuguse is headed to the London Diamond League on July 18, joining what's been billed as 🇬🇧 Josh Kerr's mile world record attempt.

🌍 The world record stands at 3:43.13, set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.

📈 Nuguse is coming off a runner-up finish in the Bowerman Mile at the Pre Classic in 3:46.61 and has won 2 of his 3 Diamond League 1500m races this season. 💎💎

🥊 Nuguse owns a 3:43.97 PB (No. 4 all-time), while Kerr's best is 3:45.34 (No. 6 all-time). Kerr won their only previous mile meeting at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic.

🤝 In the regular season, Nuguse holds a 4–2 edge over Kerr in 1500m races. Kerr, however, is 2–0 against Nuguse in global championship 1500m finals.
