A fellow teacher told me years ago how pride weekend worked in SF in the early '90s. Lesbians were in rapt attention of the political speaking. The guys just ran around checking out the scene.
No kids. No corporatism. Maybe a few fag hags but not the "notice me" types. It was for GAY people. Return to that.
I had a boy next to me at graduation who was ready to throw down with me because I told him he couldn't leave until after the ceremony. His father was in the stands telling him to leave early. I let him go and said "find some class and manners one of these days." Had a couple girls have moms hand their BABIES over the partition so they could walk across the stage with a baby on hip. Other girls were flashing stacks of cash, filming themselves.
Our valedictorian gave a wonderful speech, and she made me SO proud. Going to college on a wrestling scholarship.
That was my highlight. The hood rat stuff is deflating.
@educator4ever36 Years ago, a kid told me how in elem school his mom found out he stole twenty bucks off her dresser. Came to school and whooped is ass in front of his friends.
"Did you ever try that again?"
"HELL NAW!"
@ejrosetta My social media feed does not have my gay friends shoving Pride down our throats. It's the loony left "Allies." Know the real history, don't try to rewrite it to be "inclusive," and just allow people space without making it about yourself.
My elementary school was built in the mid 1950s and I bet that feature was a relic from then. I went to my KG teacher's retirement party in 1990 and she remembered me. Very sweet lady. Started teaching in the '40s. KG was also half day when I was a kid and it was way different than what it turned into.
Kids were different then. We benefited from lots of structure, expectations at school backed by parents who wouldn't tolerate foolishness, and lots of unstructured play time at home and school.
@ShemekaMichelle My choice is to revel in the magnificent example of our valedictorian, who is not only our first female wrestler to qualify for state but the first to receive a collegiate wrestling scholarship. Wonderful kid and a true representative of our school.
At graduation this year I saw two girls have parents hand them babies as they lined up to receive diplomas. Walked across with kids on hips. One boy in my row tried to pull down his balaclava at the recessional and another threatened to throw down with me when I told him he couldn't "leave early."
@0Beanie05923291 Every night before falling asleep, @JodieMPSanders has her audiobook playing. She always has two or three books on her list she is currently reading. It's been like that for us our whole 30 plus years of teaching.
@FOX2now Yeah, because everyone here is armed to the teeth and they frequent the range. That and the prosecutor doesn't play. I teach in North County and love where I work, but it's all about what a community will tolerate.
@0708America I had a parent phone call and told a mom her kid had 68 tardies in one quarter and she said "Why didn't anyone call me about this?" Well, the school robocalls automatically. Parents can also check the online portal for that info.
@themodpun Missouri teachers pay 14.5% and districts match that. It's also a separate pension fund not part of the state government system. There's no "workaround" for anyone.
Illinois is a ticking financial time bomb.
