This incident was answered by Deva in his SSMusic podcast. The director of Sooryan had told him the situation as this:

"Sarathkumar and Roja fall in love and get married in secret. As a IPS officer in hiding, Sarath listens to the transistor and hears Kandha Shasti Kavacham play.
The newlywed Roja pulls him inside the house and says she will sing him a duet in same tune. So let's lead the duet's 1st 2 lines with Kandha Shasti Kavacham and then we can change the tune"

Deva went to Soolamangalam Sisters explaining them this situation to seek their permission to use the tune for this scene. They understood and approved post which Deva composed the said song.

But in the film, during editing, the director had chopped away the scene that sets this context and directly opened with the song. Deva himself knew this only after watching the film on screen. Many got offended that a devotional tune was used for a duet. Deva confronted the director for ruining his reputation, but got no response. Deva has learnt to live with the consequences of actions he did not have full control over.

This is the explanation. The man followed all due process including approval of the Shasti Kavacham singers. If its not convincing, then you can consider it a legit mistake. But what sort of mindset it is to judge people by their worst mistakes on the day of their passing? Are Twitteratis here that pure and have not committed any mistakes they regret at all?

At the very least, do try and check the other side of every story before saying harsh lines like "He doesn't deserve any eulogy". Do better at being a decent person for God's sake.
