I had the great pleasure of working with Erin Nightingale and Suzy Bills on our recently published article "An Editing Process for Blind or Visually Impaired Editors." You can find it online here: https://t.co/8XwmK49fJ7. #blind#editing#amediting#WritingCommunity
"Even though an editor’s main purpose is to help authors convey their ideas clearly, at times the goal of clarity is sacrificed on the altar of prescriptive grammar rules. So which is more important...?" https://t.co/PQjgxzLCPf
Reflecting on my graduate education, I am grateful for my @englishiastate dissertation advisor Jo Mackiewicz. She provided me with professional mentoring, timely feedback, networking opportunities, letters of recommendation, and needed encouragement. #GiveThanks#AcademicTwitter
As I look forward to celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday next week, I feel immense gratitude for so many things. One thing I'm grateful for is the technology that has enabled me to keep teaching my students this year. #GiveThanks#AcademicTwitter
It's well established that the professional writing process is recursive, but what about the professional #editing process? Research from Jocelyne Bisaillon suggests that it's linear. Read more about her research in this new "Editing Research" article: https://t.co/hRHZNgqr1n
@mikepope @jspieve Agreed. I also tell my editing students to assume that some people won't read the headings, so I recommend editing in a way that the running text doesn't rely on the headings. An interesting eye-tracking study might be to see what percentage of readers do or don't read headings.
@JasonCKTham Great reminder. I remember the first time I read Dragga and Voss's "Cruel Pies: The Inhumanity of Technical Illustrations" article in which they provide a similar reminder about how such data is displayed in visual formats. We cannot forget the people the numbers represent.
For anyone teaching #bizcomm or #profcomm or #profwriting, I'm happy to announce that my coauthors and I recently published the 5th edition of "Professional Writing and Speaking." To learn more or to get an examination copy, please visit the book's site: https://t.co/kq3zzX2w8y
The power of writing feedback: With content warnings, Instagram aims to help people "pause and reflect." And "since introducing comment warnings, it's seen 'significant improvement' in people editing or not posting the comment." https://t.co/dYh7ZCr2qT
Did the candidates tailor their pieces to Utah? I compared these pieces with their words (~15,000) in recent speeches. Top different 4 words (by keyness, log likelihood) in the pieces: VP Biden [trump, president, veterans, defend]; Sen. Harris [faith, means, values, church]
With the vice presidential debate happening today in Utah, both Vice President Mike Pence and Sen. Kamala Harris wrote opinion pieces for the Deseret News. Read them here:

@KamalaHarris : https://t.co/quWRPT3mio
I'd been working on another analysis of VP Biden and Pres Trump's first debate and got my wires crossed! The results above are VP Biden's speeches compared to VP Pence's opinion piece (a potentially interesting analysis in and of itself)!
"A professional typeface shows perfection, complexity, and balance, or in other words, very consistent design characteristics. The top rated professional typefaces are Times New Roman, Helvetica, and Century Schoolbook." https://t.co/TAuZ8hurJY
Here is my calculation for pronoun use % in last night's debate. I'm trying to tease out direct addresses to the American people; closer analysis in context is needed to determine whether "you" is used in singular or plural sense. Thx https://t.co/tRXf86sMzK for the transcript.
A new article on https://t.co/bsAuK9S8Yt highlighting research by @docboettger from @UNT_TECM: "By understanding which errors to pay particular attention to during your editing test, you will be better prepared to land that top editing job" https://t.co/ajUSSC1TZA
