Sociologist of states, orgs & development @NotreDame. Author of Patchwork Leviathan. @NUSociology PhD. lover of all things Ghana. my views≠ND RT≠endorse.
@LauraRbnsn I do something like this the first three weeks but not with relative compliments (better than others) but to acknowledge what’s great about them, their comments, their questions, their writing. It’s transformative esp for disadvantaged students.
Last night a student in a scary, potentially dangerous situation reached out to me for help. it reminded me of two things:
1) you never really know what your students are dealing with and I’d rather be suckered by a fib than doubt a sad truth
2) teaching is a sacred trust
Check out Abi Ocobock’s new book! Thoughtful, in depth study of how LGBQ couples think about having access to marriage and how that shapes their relationships

Met w a student today who admits took my methods class to ✅ a box.
Now he's so psyched and knowledgeable about his project he sounds like a future prof w GREAT ideas about nonprofit shelters on migration routes in Mexico
Getting to be part of that is such a privilege🥰
Just inaugurated @NotreDame President Fr Bob Dowd. His first declaration was:
ND will be NEED BLIND and ZERO LOANS for students from anywhere in the world.
Grad student families will get health insurance.
Proud to see ND use our endowment for good.
Give assignments that let students have agency in what they write about.
My methods students were terrified of the freedom to choose their research focus bc they have ZERO prior experience being guided by their OWN interest. Now, thats the learning they value most.
@Samuel__Cohn I’d respectfully disagree on this. I think an RR from ASR is a pretty relevant signal even if it’s not a guarantee of publication. Less relevant for merely under review papers.
Thoughts on listing R&R pubs on CV for job market?
I favor listing the journal but [using different descriptive title in brackets] so it conveys content & j prestige but keeps anon of review from searches. v few ppl do this. Many list title but not journal where they have RR?

Catch your students doing well and TELL THEM. Most students have never had a prof email them to 👏 their participation/class contributions. I try to do this 3x per class the first few classes. It pays dividends! Those students 3x eager next class, they lead & bring others along.
@JaeJaeykim2 you would probably be a really solid candidate for a postdoc with the @KelloggInst given your interests! More info here: https://t.co/EmfiBQlbHj

Putting together a class w @mintytem on how sociology can provide positive models for students to solve problems, make concrete improvements in orgs, communities, or peoples' lives. Hit me w any similar classes you know of or books/articles we should read! Self refs welcome!
@FluentInFinance We had a missed connection due to air traffic control which delayed us at our takeoff and landing. We could not get in until almost 24 hours later. @Delta told us this was our fault and they owed us nothing. It was hugely frustrating. Any insight on this?
To simplify communication, if you are interested in being contacted about forming community with sociologists researching Africa, please kindly fill in this form

(wow that got bureaucratic fast, sorry y'all!)
If you are a sociologist who does research in Africa, please comment here or DM me. I'm trying to gather a list together at least for an informal network for mutual support/intellectual community, maybe official "interest group" subsection of ASA.
