@oriamexxv really capture the essence of the Nigerian story back in 2019, sadly as the title indicates, the situation is still the same 7 years later.
How long shall we continue to wallow in this darkness, Nigerians?
SAME OLD SAME OLD
The hopes and aspirations of its people,
soared above what fate had in mind.
They became like that back pimple
can't get rid of it, a worry I'm sure you'll find.
Strifing elders taught their kids to maul and kill
every one who didn't call the name of their gods.
These kids became fanatics and their parents blood did they spill,
The result of a fallacious assumption fed to the million hordes.
Bloodshed, a regular wave, same as corruption.
In penury the people lived, and in plenty the leaders failed.
A brief glance through and they alter the constitution
A chink in the democratic armour of the country made
Dwarfs of the middle east standing tall beside it,
How ironic it is to be likened to a certain Goliath.
Little wonder our only solace is the tropic's heat,
when all the irokos feed and gnaw at our heart.
They handed us torches but we burnt ourselves instead
and remained in the dark after it died down- the light
Its children's blood it shed and painted the villa red,
and hand in hand, our hopes and dreams took flight.
But then we got into the tunnel on the wings of change,
A glimmer of hope restored just for a moment.
A godly touch on the sidelines or rather the fringe,
A battle against the roots of evil and its nutrient.
But like a coming together of Thanos's thumb and index,
all was gone like a thief in the night.
All that was left was the bitter sweet pain after sex,
Back to the dependence on our widow's mite.
The labour of our heroes past is indeed in vain
Clustered together and ruled by the same recycled men
Trying to speak up our voices we did strain,
But for every one we stopped, in his place came ten.
That we are doomed to repeat our mistakes and errors
It is the curse of those who failed to learn from history
Same old, same old, forever ruled by conspiratorsAll we would ever say is, "There was a country..."
