In the Uffizi, in the Sala di Niobe, there is a group of twelve ancient sculptures dramatically depicting characters fleeing or being struck dead. The focal point of the group is Niobe, who attempts to protect her youngest daughter, and directs her gaze towards the sky.

The myth, taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, narrates that Niobe, Queen of Thebes, sinned in pride, claiming to be more fruitful than Latona, mother of Apollo and Artemis, because she gave birth to seven sons and seven daughters.

The statue of #Laocoön and His Sons, is a Hellenistic sculpture of the Rhodian school, in marble (h 242 cm) preserved in the Pio-Clementine Museum of the Vatican Museums, Vatican City.
The #statue was found in 1506 at a vineyard in the vicinity of Nero's Domus Aurea.
