The priority of the early Muslims was that they avoided impurity wherever possible
But they scrutinized the subtleties of hypocrisy and injustice they found in themselves.
~Imam Ghazali
(They didn't scrutinize the substances they found on their clothing)
I do not accept one of them, came the answer. 'What have you brought to me, O Manşur?' I then replied, 'I have brought to You Yourself And He said to me, Glory be to Him, 'Now you have come unto Me. Go, for I forgive you.
~Knowledge of the hereafter
The story is also told about Manşur ibn 'Ammar," who was seen in a dream and was asked, "What did God do to you?" He replied, "He made me stop in front of Him and He said to me, 'What have you brought to Me, O Manşur? I said, "Thirty-six pilgrimages.' He answered,...
I do not accept anyone of them.' Then He said, 'What else have you brought me, O Manşur? Three hundred & sixty recitations of the Qur'an, I said. He told me, I do not accept anyone of them. Then He said, What have you brought to Me, O Manşur. The fasts of sixty years,' said I.
In Imam Al-Ghazali's Breaking the Two Desires book 23 he explains the following four duties as a method of discipline.
1. Eat what is lawful (halal) & pure (tayyib)
- Make intentions for the sake of Allah
- Eat organic when possible
- Eat what is seasonal
-Support local farmers
Many Muslims have forgotten these traditions and simply overindulge.
Imam Al-Ghazali leaves us with this, Abu-Sulayman al-Darani said, "To renounce one desire is more profitable to the heart than to fast and pray for a whole year.”
#PropheticNutrition
- What works for each person if different (we are individual)
- Avoid diet trends, gimmicks, and quick fixes
- learn from qualified professionals
This is not just about health and better nutrition we want to be like the Prophet ﷺ and follow his traditions.
Because of him the lame walked briskly, And the songless through him burst into melody.
On the death of al-Ghazāli, Abu Muzaffar Muhamma alBawardi said of his loss: He is gone! and the greatest loss whichever afflicted me, was that of a man who left no one like him among mankind
"O Dawud, You want and I Want, So if you submit to what I Want, I'll take care of what you want. And if you don't submit to What I Want, I Exhaust you in what you want, and then you"
How do you defeat the nafs?
Deny it it’s desires at least once a day even if with something as little as a bite of food.
Cool it down with salat on the Prophet peace be upon him.
"Declare your jihad on thirteen enemies you cannot see- egoism, arrogance, conceit, selfishness, greed, lust, intolerance, anger,
lying, cheating, gossiping and slandering. If you can master and destroy them, then you will be read to fight the enemy you can see."
~Imam al Ghazali
