This is what I heard too, i.e. that it was not that Joe was being obstructed, but rather that there were simply no results. In a way, that makes the breakdown even sadder, because both sides seem to have wanted the same thing.

With that said, there is always a narrative dimension to these things, and it would have been strategically smarter to start with some small fish or get a few indictments out the door in order to keep the bigger effort going.

Mueller’s people, for all their thuggery, understood this completely. Within a few months, they indicted Papadopoulos, a total nobody, on totally irrelevant charges, because that allowed them to build this giant narrative that things were really happening and that the investigation was producing results.
