Keeping snakes away from your home

Ifunanya Nwangene’s death from snake bites is a painful reminder of the dangers snakes can pose to humans.

From the viral video, it appears she lived on the ground floor. One plausible explanation is that the snakes may have slithered in through the toilet. This is my personal theory, informed by an experience I had in 2024.

I came home this particular day and my friend, Okechi Osuala, who was staying in the guest room, informed me that a snake had been found in his room. The security guards killed it. Alarmed by this, I immediately invited professionals to fumigate the apartment.

During the fumigation exercise, an even bigger snake-a cobra-jumped out from one of the toilets as seen in the accompanying video.

It turned out that the house was connected to Abuja’s central sewage system, making it easy for reptiles to slither into the apartment through the drainage pipes. I subsequently engaged the services of a plumber to install non-return valve devices on all the toilets. These valves allow waste to flow out but automatically clamp shut, preventing anything from coming back in.

This experience is a strong warning to others. People should be extremely careful, especially if they live on the ground floor in cities like Abuja where homes are connected to central sewage systems. Other precautions to take are regular fumigation, closing the lid of your toilet always, flushing your toilet regularly with acid, sniper and other insecticides, keeping all doors and windows shut at all times, especially the toilet door, and never going into the toilet without lights on.
