As President Trump prepares to dine with the same journalists he attacks daily at tonight's White House Correspondents’ dinner, we continue to advocate for members of the press who have been targeted by the Trump administration, including Georgia Fort. Fort was arrested for covering a protest against ICE actions in Minnesota. She and other journalists were subsequently charged with federal criminal charges, including a hate crime. This attempt to criminalize Fort for fulfilling her professional duties sends a chilling message. It is a brazen attempt to discredit Fort, stifle scrutiny and erode press freedom. As tonight’s event marks a celebration of free press, we urge the Department of Justice to drop Georgia Fort's charges and respect freedom of the press.

After silencing independent journalism at home — through imprisonment, enforced disappearances, exile, and the killing of John Williams Ntwali on January 18, 2023 — the Kigali regime, also a champion of transnational repression, appears to be once again extending its intimidation beyond its borders.

Targeting @HarianaVeras , a White House–accredited Angolan journalist for covering the devastating war in eastern DRC is deeply alarming.

As a Rwandan living in exile, I stand in full solidarity with journalists who continue to report the truth despite pressure, intimidation, and attempts to silence them. Press freedom must be protected everywhere.

A government with such a track record of repression cannot credibly claim the authority to dictate how journalists should do their work.
