All democracies must call for the immediate release of Sánchez and all other journalists arbitrarily detained for exercising their profession and fundamental freedoms.

Sánchez appears to be another victim of a broader crackdown against independent journalists in Cuba. On Nov. 3, Camila Acosta was also arrested and released later that night after being held incommunicado for almost 8 hours. The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) has issued a statement condemning the sentencing of human rights lawyer Anon Nampa to an additional 2 years and 8 months in prison on a royal defamation charge and calls for the unconditional and immediate release of Anon and other prisoners of conscience.

On 30 October Anon and four other activists were found guilty of royal defamation over speeches given at a protest on 25 November 2020 and sentenced to 2 years and 8 months in prison. Anon is now facing a cumulative prison sentence of 34 years and 5 months.

HRF condemns the arbitrary detention and harassment of prominent independent journalist Camila Acosta (@acostacamila), Havana correspondent for @abc_es and reporter for @CubanetNoticias. Acosta was forcibly intercepted on Tuesday by regime agents, held overnight in the Playa police station, and kept incommunicado after officials confiscated her phone and denied her right to a phone call.

This arbitrary arrest is part of a broader systematic crackdown on independent press across the island. Just a day prior, CubaNet journalist Adelth Bonne was forcibly detained, fined, and stripped of his equipment, while @LaHoradeCuba20 director Henry Constantín (@constantincuba) remains imprisoned on fabricated charges. Acosta herself was previously subjected to a 96-hour arbitrary detention and months of house arrest for covering the historic #11J protests of 2021.
