Remember that generative AI is not predetermined to be developed in a certain way - it’s built by people, who make decisions about how to build it.

Training on other people’s work without permission is not something you have to do to get gen AI to work. If you do, it’s because you think whatever upside you judge there to be is worth the cost to creators. It’s because you believe the end justifies the means.

If someone makes that choice, they should be called out on it. At the very least, until they stop claiming - as many do - to be on the side of creators.
