Invading a neighboring country and displacing its people should not be met with calls for compromises and land concessions. The invader's talking points about "the will of the people" should not echoed and legitimized.

Don't know who needs to hear this, but Putin's annexation "referendum" was a propaganda operation and no one should fall for it. Even if you actually tried to make it fair, a "referendum" in a war zone during a war of aggression that has displaced millions has no legitimacy.
