Natural Sound vs. Noise
The adjoining building upgraded their HVAC system so what was once the quieter window has also become a source of continuous mechanical background noise.
I can listen to pre-recordd bird-song while windows are closed but it just doesn’t compare to nature
“Slow down, you move too fast
You got to make the morning last”
The 59th Street Bridge Song
Good advice for a world in such a hurry. Sound over noise. Quality over obsolescence. Natural time over rat race. Sharing over hoarding. Caring over exploiting. Peace.
It’s a beautiful sunny 16°C morning and I’d like to open the windows to air out the house and bring down the humidity but the ceaseless noise of a nearby heat-pump has left me choosing quiet over open windows and a dehumidifier turned on while going out for a walk. @ottawacity
Canada’s Shifting Seasons
Canada’s four seasons are still here, but climate change is making them more erratic, with harsher cold snaps and hotter summers becoming more noticeable.
And then there’s wildfire season.
The wood-smoke pollution in winter and early spring has morphed into noise and air pollution of leaf-blowers, mowers, chainsaws and tractors.
We need to slow down — better one person raking than three blowing.
Better open windows and fresh air than noises and fumes. @ottawacity
When real estate ads fail to mention this problem, families can suffer for months each year:
In low-lying areas, stagnant conditions can allow cold air to pool and form a temperature inversion, which keeps fine particulate matter from residential wood stoves close to the ground.
A study released last month found that wood heating emits lead into the air of local communities and homes.
“The use of wood as an energy source is a relic of the past, one that should not be relived if given a choice.”

@ottawacity On Earth Day, my walk was filled with the smells and noises of gas-powered leaf-blowers and blowing dust from sweeper-trucks, and today, noisy gas blowers polluted the air in and around our home. When is Ottawa going to get serious about reducing pollution?

Ultrafine particles, or UFPs, are tiny, unregulated and have the potential to cause major health problems. For The National, CBC's Ashley Fraser takes a look at efforts to measure UFPs in a high-concern area in downtown Toronto, sandwiched between a busy highway and an airport.
💡 Did you know? Using a wood-burning stove can make the air inside your home 3x more polluted than outside.
