I truly believe the biggest issue with The FedEx Cup is how the tour distributes points throughout the season. If done correctly, it could properly award players who achieved greatness during the season, leading to a more compelling final event than its current form.
Regarding #FedExCup, it’s not a format issue. I enjoy watching 72 holes of stroke play when everyone starts the week at even par. The problem can be solved by fixing the points distribution during the regular season and “playoff events”.
Also, eliminate the word “playoffs” from the final two tournaments leading up to the Tour Championship and just make them back to back signature events. No more improving your ranking by 20-30 spots because you happen to win a tournament towards the end of the year.
From there you halve the points for each additional tier: Signature/Playoff events (they carry the same weight in my opinion), normal tour events, and opposite field events. Something along the lines of 2000, 1000, 500, 250
I’m no mathematician, but you have to begin by awarding a larger amount of points for major championships and The Players than its current form. Winners of those events should at least be guaranteed a spot in the Tour Championship.
@NoLayingUp New format: double elimination bracket within the pods. If winner of losers bracket defeats winner of winners bracket then it goes to sudden death playoff to determine who moves on to the weekend. Keeps majority of field around for the week and prevents meaningless matchups.
