News on the disinformation front: Russian trolls have started a huge anti-democratic online campaign supporting the far right-wing party just before the German elections.

German elections are coming up, German Twitter accounts start experiencing the campaign bot pest, again. Brace yourselves, this service degrades to pure propaganda (also in the choice of posts from moderate sources shown to you)..
Heads up: Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out. If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately.

Your phone apps might contain secret spyware. Shady shell companies pay developers to add hidden code, turning weather apps into surveillance tools. Govts & data brokers track your location, Wi-Fi data—even scan WhatsApp folders. Do you know what your phone is doing?
Your favorite apps might be spying on you & selling your data to the highest bidder. @ByronTau, author of Means of Control, exposes the secret deals fueling the surveillance economy. Shady code, shell companies, & govt overreach.

@mikarv@nataliabielova Looking at the numbers of shill accounts on this platform we stand with Nataliia on this -- as so often it's still easy for bad actors to create accounts, disinform, and change opinions, and difficult/costly for benign users.
Some of us are organising the first edition of a workshop dedicated to meta-data privacy and it will be co-located with @NDSSSymposium! 🎉

@PrivacyMatters True, the wave of 'followers' with surreal profiles seems to be over. Would be interesting to see if they'll restart before the German elections (here), UK elections for you, or Canadian elections for Canadian academics (now that Musk decided that Trudeau has to go)...
It's been a great pleasure to discuss mistakes, pitfalls, and actual provably secure privacy mechanisms for behavioral biometrics at the AIK symposium - security research made in Karlsruhe ftw 😎
