There is a new court sitting almost every day on social media.
Welcome to CLIP COURT.
And sadly, many have become very efficient judges in this court.
You were not invited to the meeting.
You were not in the room.
You did not hear the introduction.
You did not hear the argument develop.
You did not hear what was said immediately before the clip.
You did not hear what was said immediately after it.
You may not even know the question the speaker was answering.
But somehow, after watching five minutes, you now understand the meeting better than the people who sat there for one hour!
And then comes the most fascinating part.
Everybody who attended must have been stupid.
Hundreds of people sat there, heard the entire conversation and apparently missed what your five minute clip miraculously revealed to you!
Beloved, COME ON.
Scripture anticipated this problem long before Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and TikTok:
“He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” Proverbs 18:13.
Notice the language carefully.
Hear the matter.
Not hear a snippet.
Not watch the viral section.
Not read somebody’s caption explaining what you are supposed to think.
Hear the matter.
There is even an academic concept that helps explain part of what happens online: context collapse.
Communication happens within a setting. There is an audience, history, sequence, shared knowledge, tone and purpose. Digital media can remove a statement from that environment and drop it before thousands of people who were never part of the original context.
So yes, the clip may be authentic.
But an authentic clip can still produce a terribly inaccurate conclusion.
A clip can be accurate as footage and inadequate as context.
That distinction is important.
Your platform does not confer omniscience.
A ring light is not one of the gifts of the Spirit.
A microphone does not automatically produce discernment.
And twenty thousand comments saying, “Exactly!” do not suddenly supply the fifty five minutes nobody watched.
Ministers too must be careful.
We cannot preach fairness on Sunday and practise digital prosecution on Monday.
We cannot demand that people interpret Scripture in context while interpreting fellow ministers completely outside context.
That is an astonishing hermeneutic:
“Context! Context! Context!” when studying Paul.
“Forget context!” when discussing Pastor Paul.
No.
“The first one to plead his cause seems right, until his neighbour comes and examines him.” Proverbs 18:17.
This does not mean public teaching cannot be challenged.
Please challenge error.
Examine doctrine.
Correct dangerous ideas.
Protect people where necessary.
But do it with integrity.
Truth does not need dishonest editing, premature conclusions or insults to defend it.
And please stop insulting people who attended meetings you never attended.
They may know something you do not know.
They heard something you did not hear.
They experienced something your phone screen cannot reproduce.
A camera captures what enters its frame. It does not automatically capture the entire context of a meeting.
So before you declare somebody a heretic, fraud, fool or whatever title Clip Court is awarding this week, perhaps do something terribly old fashioned:
Listen to the whole thing.
Jesus Himself was defended with this principle:
“Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?” John 7:51.
What a question for the digital age!
Does our law judge a man before hearing him?
Apparently, Clip Court does.
Beloved bloggers and ministers, we can do better.
Critique without caricature.
Correct without contempt.
Disagree without abuse.
Investigate before broadcasting.
And above all, hear the matter before answering the matter.
Because five minutes from a one hour teaching may give you five minutes of perfectly accurate footage...
and fifty five minutes of perfectly missing context.
Court adjourned.
After that Enzo Fernandez free kick enhhh...i just had to remind myself that I wasn't part of the band wagon who wanted him sold...Enzo Fernandez even if Maresca Flops in the City Job the whole of EPL will respect you by force
@MaxFSport@StamfordReacts Its okay not to like Enzo but you see that respect enh You must respect Him whether you like him or not, you must respect Enzo Fernandez
This Maresca shaaa...see the way he is celebrating the victory of the derby....but when he was with us he will be acting asif the match against arsenal is just like every other match...na wa oooo
@OlukosiEbenezer Nothing we that wasn't a possibility anyways...signing a player for a record breaking fee and selling him for the current joint record breaking fee is what is pretty impressive
@OlukosiEbenezer Well I guess at the end of the season the end will justify the means...if Arteta defends the title or wins the UCL then he is an astute manager who knows what he is doing if he doesnt then you'll have to explain why after losing Trossard,Martinelli & Jesus you brought just Tzolis
@OlukosiEbenezer No you didnt convince me of anything infact I was the one who was convincing you that it will only be right to Sign PNeto cos he will be a perfect fit for your system since you guys might be using the same strategy u used last season a d you agreed that Arteta like Neto anyways
@OlukosiEbenezer So it means you are finally agreeing that you'd be hoping to defend your title the same way you won it last season....which was what I said during the beginning of the transfer window....if the window ends like this what would you rate your business over 10?
