🗣️ “There is more to football than what people see on the field. Everyone in our team knew about Leo’s father’s condition. We knew there was a possibility he could pass away, but we kept going because when Messi is in pain, we all feel it. In Argentina, Leo is someone we don’t joke with when he is hurting.

A few hours before the final, we received another call saying his condition had become more critical. That call broke us. Everyone agreed Leo should rest. Nobody would have blamed him.

But Leo came back.

He came back because of the love he has for this national team. He wanted to inspire his teammates and fight for Argentina, even while carrying that pain inside.

I cried after the final not only because we lost the World Cup. I cried because I felt we couldn’t win it for Leo after everything he sacrificed. Knowing his father was on the verge of dying while he was still giving everything for us is something I will never forget.

And when I saw Leo crying after the game, it broke me even more. He deserves so much joy.

Before the tournament, Leo told me, ‘This is my last World Cup. I’m going all in.’ When Messi says something like that, you know the world is about to see the craziest version of him.

And he did it. Even with part of him broken and carrying that burden every day, he was still the best player in the tournament.
