@adb0wen Nobody listened because having whacked up our taxes via fiscal drag, having presided over huge inflationary wave which further degraded our real incomes and then having presented fictitious spending plans for next parliament he wasn't a credible messenger
@SAshworthHayes Where are these figures from? The Irish born total looks low in context of what we know about post famine flows (though maybe more went to Liverpool and the North relative to London?). Would also expect bit higher % of non-UK from 1850 onwards tracking Jewish migration from CEE
@michaelcarre I think there is an issue specifically around confluence of education, gender and racial background even if (IMHO) more about perception and branding than substance. But of course perception can take on a life of its own and become self-fulfilling
@michaelcarre Generally UK hasn't been hugely politically polarised along gender lines which is something to be grateful for even if it appears to be creeping in a bit at the margins
@michaelcarre Thanks - I do think he makes some thought-provoking points though feel some of them could also be interrogated further. Maybe UK was slightly different in that I don't recall (either personally or in a wider sense) it being particularly polarised along gender lines
@OwenWntr Also, while I'm sure he likes his Scottish golf course and appreciated being wined and dined by the late Queen, I'm not convinced he 'likes Britain' in any meaningful way
@HCH_Hill I expect you're right in a strict fiscal sense, I meant in a wider societal sense, the benefit from having said human capital (kids, teachers and parents) invested in the state system
@JamesDAustin I remember thinking it was pretty expensive when I was there around a decade ago! Though that was around Kotor/Budva, maybe inland is cheaper
@HCH_Hill Would be interesting to read more about effect of previous decade where even before 20% VAT some families have been priced out of private education and what impact that's had on state sector
@HCH_Hill I don't feel sufficiently informed to try to calculate a net balance, quite possibly the current set-up does work in favour of the state, I just don't think her underlying point is inherently ridiculous
